Dolores Angel Hamrick was born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1936. After doing some temporary work after graduating high school, she joined the United States Women Marines in October of 1954. She attended basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, in South Carolina. She was then assigned to Camp Pendleton, California, where she was a training NCO (non-commissioned officer) and worked in the company office. Hamrick spent two years at Camp Pendleton, and then was assigned to Camp H.M. Smith in Hawaii. She met her husband while in Hawaii. When her term of service was over in September of 1957, she returned to the continental U.S., and then returned to Hawaii in March of 1958 and they were married in April. Her husband, Philip Hamrick, remained in the service until 1974, and upon his retirement, they both used a portion of their GI Bills for college.
