Big changes

22 January 2025

It's official. Over the next six months, Gateway and NC DOCKS will be moving to the TIND digital collections platform. TIND is the platform that drives Digital NCThe Vault (Chartotte Mecklenberg Library), and the UC Berkeley Digital Collections. Our colleagues at UNC Chariotte's Goldmine are in the midst of a similar migration as well.

This move will change the user experience on both sites, allowing for faster access, simplified file download options, enhanced metadata and searching within NC DOCKS, and a cleaner interface. We anticipate that an added benefit will be a reduction in the number of outages due to DDoS and other bot attacks that have recently impacted Gateway.

So what does all this mean in the short term?

  1. We have stopped adding new content to Gateway in preparation for the migration. We are still digitizing material but it will not be made available intil the migration is complete, probably in June.
  2. While we will try to implement redirects, some item links will still "break" after the migration. This is unavoidable.
  3. There will be changes to the "look and feel" of the site, particularly with respect to audiovisual and externally hosted (e.g. Internet Archive) content.
  4. Both sites, Gateway and NC DOCKS, will be more search-focused, although we will be making adjustments to facilitate browsing as well. Many digital collections platforms are moving in this directions based on usage trends and on maintenance and sustainability issues.

We're excited about the migration and we hope that you are too! If you have questions, please feel free to ask.
