Mabel R. Holmes served in the United States Army Nurse Corps during World War I. Holmes was given the assignment as Chief Army Nurse on September 19, 1918. On July 7, 1919, she worked at the Base Hospital at Camp Lee in Virginia.

Holmes's record book is a collection of military memorandums of various soldiers' hospital stays; deaths; and medical and life insurance forms from 1918. The majority of the memorandums are signed off by Colonel T.S. Bratton of the Medical Corps and concern the activities at the United States General Hospital No. 6 at Fort McPherson in Georgia.
