George Preddy Papers

Video: George Preddy visits Greensboro, 1944
This color 16mm film of Major George Preddy's last visit home to Greensboro, in late August and September 1944, includes a lighthearted view of Preddy at home on Park Avenue in 1944 with his mother and driving an antique car owned by Edgar Knees, the minister at West Market Methodist Church. A second sequence shows an October 21, 1945, ceremony held at the Overseas Replacement Depot (ORD). Base Commander Col. Paul Younts presented George's parents, George Sr. and Clara, as well as his sister Rachel, with three posthumous medals honoring his service and tragic death on Christmas day 1944, when he was shot down and killed by friendly fire over Belgium. A newspaper account of the ceremony, dated October 22, 1945, with a photograph is found in the 1945-46 DAR scrapbook, Page 221. Also of possible interest is an interview with George Preddy Sr. available at https://archives.greensborohistory.org/digital/preddy-george-talks.
