What's in the full collection?: The collection consists of correspondence; military papers; photographs; and writings by Evelyn Horton. Most of the correspondence is written by Evelyn to her parents back home in Massachusetts. However; there are a few letters from WAC friends and one letter from her brother. The photographs include photographs from before Evelyn joined the WAC; photographs of her in uniform at Camp Pickett; Virginia; Evelyn costumed as "Miss Liberty" for the United States Army musical revue Sandsations of 1944; other photographs from her military days; and of her wedding. The writings folder contains poems written by Evelyn and accounts of some of her travels while she was stationed overseas with the military.
Full biography: Evelyn E. Horton of Eastondale, Massachusetts, was a technician third grade in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) during World War II. She was stationed in Cairo, Egypt, with the Middle East Service Command from May 1944 through 1945. Evelyn E. Horton of Eastondale, Massachusetts, joined the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) in July 1942 and re-enlisted in the WAC when it was established in 1943. She was stationed at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, then transferred to Camp Pickett, Virginia. She was sent overseas and stationed in Cairo, Egypt, with the Middle East Service Command from May 1944 through 1945.

The company was under the command of 2nd Lieutenant Florence S. Weil, pictured center (see also the Florence S. Weil Papers, WV0255). All the women wear WAC summer service uniforms and Hobby hats.
