March for Justice: Documenting the Greensboro Massacre

March for Justice: Documenting the Greensboro Massacre will provide digital access to at least 100 linear feet of material related to the 1979 Greensboro Massacre, an event in which five protestors were murdered by the Ku Klux Klan and neo-nazis. Digitization of the Greensboro Massacre Collection (complied by Signe Waller Foxworth) at UNCG and the Greensboro Truth and Reconciliation Collection at Bennett College will provide researchers with access to materials that have been completely or partially unavailable for academic study. The collections span roughly 48 years, from 1973 to 2021 and document events, actions and persons connected with the Greensboro Massacre and the short-term and long-term consequential aftermath for Greensboro as it bears on racism, white supremacy and labor history. Digitization of these collections was made possible though a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant administered through the North Carolina State Library, and will be complete by June 2024.

Greensboro Massacre Collection
The collection includes newspaper clippings related to the Greensboro Massacre and other social justice causes, trial materials related to the Greensboro Massacre criminal and civil trials, materials from the Greensboro Truth and Reconciliation Commission, publications from social justice organizations like the CWP, audiovisual materials, and materials from Jim Waller, and drafts of writings by Signe Waller Foxworth. Digitization of this collection will be complete by spring of 2024.
Greensboro Truth and Reconciliation Collection
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission Collection contains documents concerning the fatal clash between members of the Communist Workers Party (CWP) and members of the Ku Klux Klan and the Nazi Party which occurred on November 3, 1979, as well as the subsequent investigation and findings of the Greensboro Truth and Reconciliation Commission (GTRC). This collection includes correspondence, hearing transcripts, court documents, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, posters, audio/visual material and photographs, manuscripts, and other materials documenting these events. Digitization of this collection is in progress through the first six months of 2024.
