The collection materials span 1943-1945 and include 45 letters Croninger sent to her husband, Lieutenant Fred Croninger, who was serving in the United States Navy; three letters to Mary from friends and family; and a chapter of an unpublished transcript Mary wrote about her experiences in New Guinea.
Mary Alwida Reamer Croninger (1914-2002), of Bellevue, Ohio, served with the American Red Cross from 1943-1945. Croninger applied to join the American Red Cross in November, 1942. She was accepted and after training, shipped to Papua New Guinea in March 1944 where she was assigned as recreation director for the 51st Army General Hospital. In July 1945 she transferred to Manila, Philippines.
