Romany Arrowsmith Oral History

Oral history interview with Romany Arrowsmith
Primarily documents the life of Romany Christina Arrowsmith and her time in the United States Navy and United States Navy Reserves. Arrowsmith recalls growing up in Saudi Arabia and Sri Lanka, her desire to relocate to the United States and her initial negative thoughts of the United States and Americans. She also recalls how her vision and attitude towards the United States changed once she was here, her unfamiliarity with the American financial aid system and how she was ultimately forced to leave college during her first semester, and how this led to her decision to join the U.S. Navy. Arrowsmith describes how once she joined the U.S. Navy, she realized she could do things she thought she never could, the sexism, resentment, and tearing down of women that she experienced from her male counterparts during Arabic training, the toxically masculine environment she experienced in the workplace, and her desire to be of service to people in a way that is considered culturally difficult.
