Nancy Ashley Myers Papers

Oral history interview with Nancy Ashley Myers
Primarily documents the life of Nancy Ashley Myers and her service with the United States Army Nurse Corps. Myers recalls her childhood in rural Ashe County, North Carolina; her desire to pursue nursing as a career, which led to her subsequent studies at Wake Forest University, as well as North Carolina Baptist Hospital, in Winston-Salem, N.C.; and she recalls the admiration she held for an aunt who was part of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, and how that inspired her to join the service. Myers recalls her time during basic training at Camp Bullis Military Training Reservation, and her excitement upon learning her first military assignment would be to Belgium, where she worked as head nurse of a fifty-bed medical-surgical unit, as well as the recovery room. Myers also discusses the traveling she did and interactions she had while stationed in Europe. Myers discusses returning to the United States and being assigned to Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, where she proceeded with a six-month advanced medical-surgical course, followed by two years as Deputy Director of the Practical Nursing program, and finished with Myers receiving her Master's in Hospital Administration degree, with a Nursing Methods Analyst concentration. Myers recalls her assistance with the design of a new hospital at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point; meeting and subsequently marrying her husband Jim; and attending Commanding General Staff College through the U.S. Army Reserve System. She also recalls her three-year assignment to the Emergency Room at Tripler Army Medical center, Hawaii, where she was eventually promoted to Lieutenant Colonel; her four-year assignment to the U.S. Pentagon, where she worked in the Health Facility Planning Agency; and her final assignment to Fort Carson, Colorado, where she was assigned Head Nurse. Myers retired from the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in 1990, after twenty-three years.
