Scrapbook documents Gunschel's service in the United States Navy WAVES from November 1943-1946. Contents include letters written to her, church service programs and hymnals, documentation of her participation in a 1945 United States Senate hearing about WAVES kept in the military past their date of discharge, as well as a cryptography handbook and pre-test.
Barbara Gunschel (1923-2007), of Bayonne, New Jersey, joined the United States Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) on 26 Oct. 1943. She attended Naval Training Station in the Bronx, New York. On 15 Dec. 1943, she started Naval Training School in Cedar Falls, Iowa. It is probable that during this time she received training in cryptography. She finished her training on 7 Feb. 1944 and reported to Washington, DC on 17 Feb. 1944.
