Oral history interview with Amanda D. Westfall
Primarily documents the life of Amanda D. Westfall and her service with the United States Army. Westfall describes her experiences as one of the first members of the all-female Cultural Support Teams, including her belief that the program was destined for failure due to the hasty training they received prior to deployment. She recalls a constantly depressing environment while deployed due to casualties, and how she learned to mask her emotions until she had time to process the events. Westfall also recalls the positive relationships she formed with the Afghan women, and the importance of conveying to these women that she was paying attention to their needs and was there to help them. Westfall also describes her experience as part of Gayle Tzemach Lemmon's 2015 book Ashley's War: The Untold Story of a Team of Women Soldiers on the Special Ops Battlefield.
