Primarily documents the life of Mary Ellen Shugart and her service with the United States Army Nurse Corps. Shugart recalls the varied medical training she received at St. Francis School of Nursing in New Castle, Pennsylvania, the wide-ranging injuries she was tasked with treating in Korea and Vietnam, both for U.S. soldiers and the Vietnamese, and the opportunity to go on several rest & recuperation (R&R) tours to Japan and China. Personal topics include Shugart's admiration for the Korean people and what they have accomplished within their country, her occasional use of "tough love" on the injured soldiers as a form of motivation, and the confidence she gained during her time in the Army Nurse Corps.
