Caroline Harrington Bradburn Bradford (b. 1925) served in the United States Cadet Nurse Corps from 1943 to 1945. Carolina Harrington Bradburn Bradford was born 6 February 1925 in Ridge, Maryland. She attended St. Michael's Elementary School and then Great Mills High School for two years, before moving to Washington D.C., where she graduated from Central High School in June 1942. On 16 September 1942, at the age of seventeen, Bradford entered nursing school at Garfield Memorial Hospital. When the United States Cadet Nurse Corps was established in 1943, Bradford's class was encouraged to join, which most of them did. In the spring of 1944, Bradford was sent to Children's Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and then to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, D.C. to study psychiatry, after which she returned to Garfield Memorial Hospital and was then transferred to Newton D. Baker Army Hospital in Martinsburg, West Virginia for the remainder of her training. After the war, Bradford applied to the Veteran's Administration and was assigned to Winter General Army Hospital in Topeka, Kansas in February 1946. She worked with psychiatric patients and noted psychiatrists and brothers, Drs. Karl and William Menninger. While at Winter General Bradford met her future husband, who was working as a charge attendant. In October 1946, Bradford resigned from her position and moved back to Washington, D.C. to assist her ailing mother, and her future husband transferred to Mount Alto Veterans Administration Hospital, also in Washington, D.C. They were married 26 November 1946. Bradford became pregnant soon after, but continued to work as a nurse until the birth of their first child. After the birth of their second child, in order to keep her nursing license current, she worked part time as a private duty nurse through the Official Registry of the American Nurses' Association. After Bradford's husband retired in 1976, she went to work for a family practitioner for the next twenty years.
