Full biography: Westray Battle Boyce (1901-1972), of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, served in the United States Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) and the Women's Army Corps (WAC) from 1942-1947. From 1943-1944 she was the WAC staff director in the North African Theater of Operations under General Dwight D. Eisenhower. For her work she was awarded the Legion of Merit, the first woman to be awarded this honor. In May 1945, she was appointed as the second director of the Women's Army Corps and promoted to Colonel. Boyce retired from the Women's Army Corps in 1947.
