Helen Hunter Weant (1920-2015) of Sloan, Iowa, served as a flight nurse in Army Air Forces during World War II. Helen Hunter Weant of Sloan, Iowa, graduated from the Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa, in 1941 and initially joined the Red Cross. She joined the Army Nurse Corps in October 1942 and was sent to the hospital at Army Air Forces Base Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She graduated from the Army Air Forces school of air evacuation at Bowman Field, Kentucky, in July 1943 and was assigned to detached service at Dunnelon Florida. In March 1944, she departed for Guadalcanal as a member of the 801st medical evacuation squadron. She served as a flight nurse in the Pacific Theatre based in New Guinea and Leyte, Philippines, until November 1945, and was discharged in February 1946.
