Hazel Meeks Jones (1918-2005) of Taliaferro County, Georgia, served in the Army Nurse Corps (ANC) from 1942 to 1965. Hazel Meeks Jones was born in 1918 to sharecroppers in Talliferro County, Georgia. She graduated from high school in Crawfordville and then completed three years of nursing school at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. Following graduation she worked at a tuberculosis sanitarium in Alto, Georgia. Jones enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps (ANC) in 1942 and completed basic training at Fort Rucker, Alabama. She was assigned to the station hospital in Atlanta, where she worked as an operating room scrub nurse for a year and a half. In late 1943, Jones was sent overseas to the 372nd Station Hospital in Kalaikunda, India, where she remained until fall 1945. Upon her return to the United States, Jones was stationed at the Oliver General Hospital in Augusta as an ANC reservist. She then joined the regular army and was transferred to Tripler Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she served for four years during the Korean War mostly working on the ENT (ear nose and throat) service. In March 1952, Jones was transferred to Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C., and in August of that year she married Bob Jones, an army medical supply coworker from Tripler. Jones was later sent to Ireland General Hospital at Fort Knox, Kentucky, before being transferred overseas to the 2nd General Hospital in Germany, where she was in charge of the neurosurgery ward. In 1961, Jones returned to the United States and was stationed at Womack Army Hospital in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She retired from the army in 1965 as a major, and the Jones' continued to reside in Fayetteville. Jones died 17 November, 2005.
