This December 7, 1973 article published in the Greensboro College student newspaper, The Collegian, describes the formation of a new black organization, called the United Afro-American Society (UAAS), at Greensboro College. The UAAS was founded by Bill McClain, Rhonda Ryan and Arvel Williams. The goal of the UAAS was to provide a conducive environment for black students studying in a primarily white school. The article indicates that there was a feeling that the UAAS was needed because the school was not fostering enough awareness of black students and their
