The collection includes two binders of various course materials related to the military's racial sensitivity training. These materials are items such as 110 military publications, lesson plans, handouts, reading assignments, practical exercises, summaries for teaching points, 2 pages of handwritten notes, and over 50 pages of corrections.

The materials in these binders were used to train instructors about racial sensitivity and were compiled by a woman who attended the the USAREUR Race Relations School (URRS). Her training consisted of a four-week, part- time instructors course, and a one-week company commander course. Training methods included lectures, demonstrations, discussions in both small and large groups, field trips, and films. Part-time instructors, upon completing the course, were expected to be able to develop training aids, conduct research, and lead lectures, discussions, and seminars. The Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute (DEOMI), the brainchild from the Department of Defense's Directive 1322.11 and a board for Race Relations Education, opened its doors in 1971. The catalyst for the DoD was the growing civil rights movement of the 1960s and the national dialogue of segregation/inequalities taking place in policymaking.
