Oral history interview with Amy Dolores Epley
Primarily documents the life of Amy Dolores Epley and her service with the United States Army. Epley discusses her reasons for joining the U.S States Army, including it being a way to pay off her educational loans by using the army's College Loan Repayment Program, and how it was also a way for her to serve her country and travel. She also recalls being slightly naïve about what being in the army was actually going to entail. Epley describes the multiple trainings she received during her years in service, the different countries she was able to live and work in, including Germany, Turkey, and Bosnia, and the various cultures she was able to experience. She also shares her memories of being chosen to run in the Army Ten-Miler race as a representative of the American German team, as well as revealing her most embarrassing moment while serving in the military and most rewarding military experience. Personal topics include the difficulty of finding out during Advanced Individual Training from her company commander that her mother had passed away abruptly, and her perception that the company commander was unsupportive and uncompassionate when delivering the tragic news. She also describes the sexual harassment she witnessed, and personally experienced, while in the army, including an attempted assault while stationed in Turkey, which, in later years, caused her to develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
