Primarily documents Teressa Jenkins Lawrence's service with the United States Army. Lawrence recalls growing up with feelings of insecurity during the time of the Civil Rights Movement, and the strain she felt between herself and her white friends. She describes feeling the need to be independent, and the thought that the military would give her opportunities that a small town could not. Lawrence also recalls how the military taught her a lot of things about herself, such as learning to speak up, and that she was a lot stronger than she thought.
