Primarily documents Renee L. Gurley's adolescence; her service with the United States Air Force; and her life after service. Gurley discusses growing up during the late 1950s and 1960s, her love of the outdoors, and the lessons she learned early in life as a Girl Scout; which include an appreciation of nature, an appreciation of the differences in other people, and the need to be a sister to every other Girl Scout. " Gurley relates how she wanted to be a nurse from the time she was in high school, and her desire to attend the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in order to fulfill this goal. She reveals her struggles with procrastination, her initial displeasure with working in a civilian hospital, and how that experience encouraged her to join the United States Air Force. " Gurley then discusses her satisfaction with changing assignments every few years, her work with pediatrics and family practice, and her occasional struggles with managing motherhood and her career in the air force. " Other topics include how, as a woman, she saw changes in the air force during her career, how the military is like a family, and her appreciation of the air force for challenging her.
