Oral history interview with Irene A. Gepfert Mertz
Irene Mertz speaks of her early life, education, military service, and life after her service. Mertz discusses her time in military service in Oahu, especially one of her patients there, Major Roger G.B. Broome, who later passed away after returning to the continental United States. She mentions President Roosevelt visiting Major Broome, as well as various social activities at Oahu. She also discusses her brother Bill's experiences in World War II, including the Battle of the Bulge, as well as her grandson, a pilot, having been killed in Afghanistan. Mertz also mentions her experiences of V-E Day and V-J Day, the women's liberation movement, women in combat, and Don't Ask, Don't Tell.
