The collection includes a letter to Burnett from Lucile Thompson of the Office of Naval Officer Procurement who inquired how Burnett was doing at the Great Lakes Naval Center for her basic training. Another letter; dated 19 March 1949, was written by Burnett to her family and it describes basic training and her free time off base in Waukegan, Illinois. The collection also includes a navy blue jacket and skirt, a navy blue garrison cap, a seersucker garrison cap, and a shoulder navy ranking insignia for Petty Officer 3rd class; a clipping about WAVES Captain Joy Bright Hancock From American Magazine.
