Lou A. Hedding was born in Pismo Beach, California. During World War II she trained in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) at Camp Maxey, Texas, and Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. Hedding broke her foot during a WAC softball game and worked in the supply office at Fort Oglethorpe. After training she was sent to Camp Stoneman in Pittsburg, California, in preparation for traveling to the South Pacific.
