Kathryn Fulner Wakefield (1920-2012) of Hillsdale, New Jersey, performed clerical work in the WAAC (Women's Auxiliary Army Corps) and the WAC (Women's Army Corps) from 1943 to 1945. Kathryn Fulner Wakefield was born in Brooklyn, New York, on 29 February 1920, and raised in Hillsdale, New Jersey. In 1939, she graduated from Park Ridge High School. She went on to complete a four year business course and work in a leather tannery office in New York. Wakefield enlisted in the WAAC in 1943 and was sent to Daytona Beach, Florida, for basic training. She then attended the Army Administration School in Alpine, Texas. In summer 1943, Wakefield was assigned to Greenwood Army Air Base in Mississippi, where she re-enlisted in the WAC. In December of that year, she was transferred to Jackson, Mississippi, where her duties included: colonel's secretary, recruiting, court stenography, and administration office work. While stationed there, she met Carl Wakefield, and the two were married in July of 1944. In the fall of that year, she was transferred to Dothan, Alabama, where she did court stenography. She was discharged from the WAC in October of 1945. After completing her service, Wakefield moved to Sebring, Florida, to live with her husband. Following Carl's discharge in September 1946, the couple moved to Wauchula, Florida, and then to Greensboro, North Carolina. Wakefield was a stay-at-home mom until her children were in school, and then worked part-time as a nurse's aide and at Gate City Savings. Wakefield died on 25 November, 2012.
