Bernice McCormack served as a nurse in the Army Nurse Corps during the Second World War. She was stationed in West and North Africa during the conclusion of the Allied North African Campaign. The diary spans the period from December 5, 1942 to May 5, 1944. " The diary primarily documents McCormack's day to day activities during the war. It contains a detailed account of an eventful naval voyage from Charleston, South Carolina to Dakar, Senegal; it details the difficulties encountered by army nurses operating in Africa; provides descriptions of McCormack's battles with malaria and other tropical diseases; and gives an account of McCormack's transfer to Cairo, Egypt. Additionally, McCormack's dairy gives detailed descriptions of various African cities, Germany's surrender in Africa, and a trip to Jerusalem.
