Jane Hydes Council (1922-2010), was born 4 June, 1922 in Pennington, New Jersey. After graduating high school in 1940, Council wanted to join the United States Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC), but couldn't until she was twenty-one years of age. In the meantime, she assisted with the war effort by working in the office of an airplane factory, as well as a gyroscope plant in Hopewell, New Jersey, until July 1943 when she enlisted with the WAACs. Council was given orders to Fort Devens, Massachusetts for WAAC training, but after two weeks the WAAC was converted to the United States Women's Army Corps (WAC), and Council was sent to Daytona Beach, Florida for her training instead. After basic training, Council signed up for six weeks of motor transport school in Ormond Beach, Florida, where she learned to drive two and a half ton trucks and command cars. Council was then sent to Fort Belvoir, Virginia, where she was assigned to assist with visiting foreign officers. During this time she met her husband, who was also in the service, and in February 1944, when he returned from duty overseas, they were married. They settled in Richmond, Virginia, and Council soon became pregnant, requiring her to resign from the WACs. Council later moved to Atlanta, Georgia where she attended Agnes Scott College. The family later moved to Greensboro, North Carolina, where Council died on 6 November, 2010.
